Between her emotional scars and Richard’s confusion over their conversations, plus a hefty dose of drama brought in by the fact that there’s a child in Nell’s care, Don’t Bother to Knock is compelling, if a bit melodramatic at times. Nell speaks mostly in low-volume riddles, almost as if she is in a daze. On the whole, the film is a bit of a wild watch. The entire cast is great - Ann, Marilyn, Richard, Elisha. While Monroe is great and I love the fact that this role gives her some psychological complexity to work with, this re-watch gave me a great appreciation for Don’t Bother to Knock as an ensemble film.
